Session 2 10:45am - 11:45am

Literature Review Process: Question Prompts to Guide Graduate Research Projects

by Dr. Omer Farooq and Monica Maher

At our institution, we present information literacy sessions for graduate students enrolled in research methods courses prior to starting their theses and dissertations. Based on our experience conducting individual research consultations with graduate students and our discussions with faculty who supervise graduate students’ theses and dissertations, we developed a set of questions highlighting the literature review process. We embed these questions throughout the sessions to help students develop a conceptual framework to guide the literature review for a thesis or dissertation. The purpose of these prompts is to engage students metacognitively, making them aware of their thinking about the research process, and illustrate the iterative nature of the literature review process.

Session 3: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

One Year Later: Evaluating the Peer Evaluation Process

by Kim Harp

In May of 2020, The Education and Research Services department at McGoogan Health Sciences Library piloted a new peer consultation process for library instruction and tested the process out for two semesters. The intention was to try the process "on for size" with the knowledge that we would adjust as needed. Attendees will learn more about peer consultation and the collaboration among the team to fine tune the process. Hear more about the benefits and challenges that arose throughout the test phase of our process and how other library teams can use peer consultation to improve information literacy instruction and the sharing of ideas and instructional techniques across library faculty and staff. Attendees will also hear how the pandemic affected the roll out of new policy and procedures and the technologies that the team used to address barriers.
