Scoping Reviews

Types of Support

Librarians are available to help UNL-affiliates teaching and conducting advanced reviews including systematic reviews, scoping reviews, mixed methods reviews, and other qualitative evidence syntheses. We offer varying levels of support for different types of projects and teams.

The Institute of Medicine recommends that a librarian or information specialist be involved in the systematic review process. In fact, this study published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology shows that librarian involvement in systematic reviews improves both the quality and the reproducibility of the literature search.

Levels, areas of support, and amount of time spent on each request are at the discretion of the individual librarian and based on availability and expertise.

  • Co-author

Student projects/dissertations

  • Consultation-level (up to 3 consultations)

Research Teams

Consultation-level support

For the consultation level, librarians can provide up to 3 hours of support. During this time, we can provide one or two in-person or virtual consultation either with individuals or with a research team with followup emails. These consultations may provide an overview of the review process, choosing the right review type for your project, resources including the appropriate standards and guidelines, and getting started with building a search strategy.

Collaboration-level support

For the collaboration level, we can provide up to 8 hours of support (at the librarian's discretion). During this time, we can provide multiple in-person or virtual consultations either with individuals or with a research team and provide troubleshooting and advising via email. For more on what librarians may provide at this level of support, visit the What librarians can do page.

For this level of support, we request acknowledgment in the published review.

Co-author-level support

Librarian co-authorship is available subject to librarian availability and interest. If you'd like to discuss bringing a librarian on to your team as a co-author, contact us using our Advanced Reviews Intake Form.
