Technical Writing

A guide to assist students in doing library research for technical writing.

Getting Started

For this class you will need to be able to identify and retrieve articles (and/or other published documents) that provide evidence or support for your a recommendation report.  Although the public web can also be an excellent source of information for a number of purposes, it can be more difficult to thoroughly vet and evaluate what you are finding.  Library sources of information, on the other hand, have previously been evaluated to some extent. In this guide we will be primarily focusing on library-related sources of information.

You should consider several things when beginning to gather information sources for a project like yours:

  • What are the different information types/formats and when would you want to use them?
  • What are the resources you would use to find the various types of information?
  • How do you do the actual information search?
  • How do you evaluate what you've found?

The tabs on the left will explore each of these topics in greater depth.  And perhaps most importantly, please take note of my contact information, also on the left.  I welcome questions from students.  With the various COVID restrictions, emails and Zoom consultations work best these days.
