What type of degree you want will depend on the type of work that interests you. Some people may prefer the library centric MLS (Master of Library Science) degree, while other may prefer to mix in technology and go after the MLIS (Master of Library and Information Sciences), while still others may prefer to immerse themselves in technology and acquire a MIS (Master of Information Sciences). In general these are considered terminal degrees with no higher degree being required to have a career in the field of information science. There are of course exceptions to every rule, however, most people who pursue a doctoral degree on the library side of things do so at a later date to either teach at a library school or ischool or to qualify for a Dean's position at a tenure track academic library. Some individuals who wish to be a Dean of Libraries will pursue Business or Educational doctorates instead.
