Architecture and Interior Design: Finding Books

Finding and using resources in Architecture and Interior Design

Finding Books at Architecture Library

Find books on architecture and interior design by doing keyword or title searches in the library catalog. When you find a relevant title, you may want to use the subject heading links listed in the catalog record to guide your further searches. Books are cataloged with a Library of Congress call number and will probably be part of the Architecture Library collection.  Occasionally, design-related materials are also housed at Love Library, the Dinsdale Family Learning Commons (on UNL’s East Campus) or the Engineering Library.  Many books on subjects relevant to planning are held at Love and other branch libraries.

  • Shelving at the Architecture Library:  Books and bound journals are interfiled.  Call numbers beginning with A-NA736 are shelved on the first floor, while call numbers beginning with NA737-Z are shelved in the lower level.  All printed reference books are shelved on the second floor, west side.
  • Reference:  Reference books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries relating to Architecture, Interior Design, City Planning, and Landscape are located on the second floor of the library. Reference books do not circulate; you’ll need to use them in the library.  Scanners and a photocopier are available.
  • Periodicals: Current periodicals that are not yet bound are shelved alphabetically on the second floor of the library near the Circulation/Reference desk.  Once or twice a year current issues are bound; bound issues are shelved with books in the stacks area in call number order.
  • Reserves and E-Reserves:  Reserves are kept behind the Circulation/Reference Desk. These generally can be checked out for 2 hours.  Just ask at the desk on the second floor of the library. Many reserves are available electronically through the catalog listed under Course Reserves/E-Reserves.
  • Folios: Because of their size, age, and/or condition, some books are kept on flat shelves in the lower level.  Many of these books circulate although some may only be used in the library.
  • Special Collections: Some books on Architecture are considered rare and are therefore kept in our Special Collections department at Love Library.  See here for Archives & Special Collections' hours.
  • LDRF:  Some less frequently used books and bound journal backfiles are stored at an offsite facility, the LDRF (Library Depository and Retrieval Facility). You can request LDRF books be sent to you at the Architecture Library by using the Delivery link in the catalog record.  There is no fee for this service and materials usually arrive within 24-48 hours.
