Instructions and Troubleshooting for Mendeley and RefWorks: Refworks and Refworks Citation Manager

A guide to installing and troubleshooting Mendeley and RefWorks

Instructions for RefWorks RCM

Complete the following steps in order to use the newest version of RefWorks Citation Manager.

1. If you don't already have a RefWorks login, please go to https://refworks.proquest.com/ and click "Create account" at the bottom of the login box. Follow the steps to create an account.

2. Next is installing the citation plugin for Word that works with RefWorks.

  • Go to http://libplugins.unl.edu. You will be prompted to use your UNL credentials to log-in.
  • Once you’ve authenticated, mark the checkbox for RefWorks.
  • Click the Save button.
  • Wait for the messages to appear that confirm your choices were saved.

3. After waiting at least one hour, check to see if the plug-in for RefWorks is available in your Word online and desktop Word applications:

  • For Word online
    • Authenticate to https://portal.office.com/ using your UNL credentials
    • Open Microsoft Word in your web browser and open a new document
    • In the menu, look for “RCM," probably to the right of "Help" on the menu. If the plug-in installed, you should see “RefWorks Citation Manager” appear when you click "RCM.""
    • Click “RefWorks Citation Manager." You may be prompted to log in to your RefWorks account. Please sign in to confirm that your library is available.
  • For your desktop install of Word
    • Open your installed Word application locally on your computer and open a new document.
    • Select the References menu option. If the plug-in installed, you should see “RCM” very similar to the above.
    • Click “RefWorks Citation Manager." You may be prompted to log in to your RefWorks account. Please sign in to confirm that your library is available.

4. If you are not able to access RefWorks in Word after waiting one hour and following the above steps, please log out of UNL’s Word online and completely close your desktop application of Word. Then go through Step 3 again to see if relaunching the software fixed the issue, and the plug-in is now available.

5. If RefWorks is available in Word online, but not the desktop version, please go to: Insert > Get Add-ins > Admin Managed and click "RefWorks Citation Manager." You may need to click "Refresh" in the upper right corner to see the RefWorks Add-in.
