Communication, Events, Graphic Design & Website Content at the University Libraries: Communications & Marketing

How to Promote Your Projects, Research, Services, and People and Meet Deadlines

Publicity Process

Publicity process -External Communication
  • Who is the target audience?
    • This is the main question we ask.
  • Develop a marketing plan that reaches the right audience
    • Places on-campus to submit publicity for events/programs/stories include:
      • Nebraska Today
      • The Graduate Report
      • Next@Nebraska
      • Teacher Connect
      • Libraries public Blog (News & Stories)
      • University calendar of events
      • Libraries social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
      • Information Station (Housing)
      • Digital Signage across campus (Union/Housing)
      • Parents E-newsletter
      • Alumni Association
      • Greek Housing newsletter

Off-campus
  • A written press release to University Communications. They edit and distribute across the state.
  •
  • Community calendars for: Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World-Herald, KFOR, 10/11 News, Channel 8 news, Downtown Lincoln Association, Lincoln Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Depending on the event/program to promote, we have to brainstorm a customized list of targets. Examples from the past include:
  • OLLI
  • Nebraska historical and genealogical societies
  • Nebraska Libraries and Librarians
  • UNCL
  • Other academic libraries in the region
  • UNL Libraries retirees
  • LPS teachers

Social Media

The Libraries accounts that are maintained by UX include:

Twitter - https://twitter.com/UNL_Lib

Facebook -- https://www.facebook.com/UNLLibraries

Instagram -- https://www.instagram.com/unl_lib

Public Blog -- https://unllibraries.blogspot.com/

Events, exhibits, campaigns, and other news are promoted via these platforms along with themes touching on the Libraries services, resources, and spaces. We also include content that engages with the audience. The Peer Guides help maintain the content as a student -to-student marketing effort. Other tools utilized include Box, Basecamp, and Hootsuite.

Internal Communication

Internal communication usually contains information not allowed for the general public and is a means by which library staff can inform each other of projects in the works.

At this time we have an internal blog -- Library Buzz Blog that features behind the scenes stories of committees, thoughtful updates from chairs and coordinators, and kudos.

The LPA Newsletter is published by the LPA group within the Libraries.

As of the Fall 2019 semester, a news bulletin of talking points will be distributed to the Libraries faculty on a regular basis. An example of the type of bulletin can be found in Box.
