Communication, Events, Graphic Design & Website Content at the University Libraries: Media Protocol

If you are contacted by the media to please contact Joan Barnes, jbarnes3@unl.edu.  

1. The media may be asking for an official comment or statement regarding the Libraries programs, collections, services, or policies. Joan can help find the best spokesperson within the Libraries and work with that person to speak on behalf of the Libraries.  
2. If the media is contacting Libraries faculty and staff about their research or an area of study that is considered an area of expertise (example: copyright), please still let Joan Barnes know that you plan to be interviewed.  She can offer support by helping you prepare with tips to get your message across, go through possible talking points, and to amplify your interview when it is broadcast or published via the Libraries social media.

Media = student journalists from various publications or classes on campus, Nebraska and national newspapers and broadcast media.

Filming in the Libraries

Student journalists and others ask to film in the Libraries. Those requests should always be referred to Joan Barnes for permission.  She vets the request, communicates parameters, or seeks assistance from University Communications if the request comes from an outside group or commercial entity. 

University Communications and other departments of the University often request to film in library locations. Staff from these units usually contact me or the Learning Commons Coordinator, if the location is one of the learning commons.  If you are contacted, please refer them to Joan Barnes.

The only exceptions are the University’s official photographers.  They walk about campus taking pictures for the University. If someone identifies themselves as a University Communications photographer, let them take pictures and just let Joan Barnes know they are in the building.
