English 800-999: BIOGRAPHIES

Resources for graduate students in English

Biographical Resources

PRINT and MICROFORM RESOURCES

1.  Look up book-length biographies by SUBJECT in the Libraries' Advanced Search.

Examples:

Alcott Louisa May 1832 1888 Biography

Hardy Thomas 1840 1928 Biography

2.  Many students find the Dictionary of Literary Biography to be one of the best sources for biographical information on writers.  Entries in the DLB tend to be much more thorough than the briefer biographical information found in Contemporary Authors (LOVE Ref PS221 C663x).  The cumulative index for Contemporary Authors indexes not only that title, by all of the other Gale literature series titles, including the Dictionary of Literary Biography.  Individual volumes of the DLB are being given separate call numbers and the volumes will be shelved throughout the Love North Basement once the new call numbers have been assigned.  Use the online Gale Literary Index to ascertain which volume(s) include information on your author or topic and then check the catalog to find out the call number of the volume.  The Gale Literary Index indexes all of the Gale series, not just the DLB.  University of Nebraska-Lincoln has some, but not all, of the volumes in the Gale series.

3.  The most complete biographical information index source in the Libraries is Bio-Base.  Ask a reference librarian for assistance when you want to use this index on microfiche.
