Music Copyright Resources: Public domain

This guide will point you toward resources to help navigate the complex world of music copyright issues.

About public domain

Works in the public domain are free of any intellectual property rights. Either the copyright holder's rights have expired or the rights are forfeited or unclaimed. This means you can freely use these works for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.  Because there have been many changes in copyright laws, it can be difficult to determine whether something is in the public domain.
