This publication ranks over 25,000 of the nation's leading private and public businesses by size as measured by sales volume and number of employees. These indicators are also used to rank these businesses within each state, within industry categories, and within the private/foreign-owned designation.

This work provides financial norm and business ratio data developed from actual company income statements and balance sheets. The information is arranged by SIC code, with a short industry title, and an indication of the number of companies in each industry sample. Both typical and common-size financial statements and 14 key ratios provide important information about industry performance with respect to solvency, efficiency and, profitability.

The source of data is tax returns filed with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. The most recent edition provides data on millions of U.S. corporations. It provides 50 performance indicators for each industry, and at the end of each industry section, performance indicators for the last 10 years are shown. Data are grouped into 13 categories by size of assets in each industry. About 180 lines of business are covered.

The Almanac provides norms in actual dollar amounts for revenue and capital factors such as net receivables, inventories, total assets, and it gives you important average operating costs in percent of net sales for: cost of operations, pensions and benefits, compensation of officers, wages and salaries, taxes and more.
