Open Access Publishing Agreements at UNL Libraries

Microbiology Society: “Read and Publish” Agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliance

UNL authors whose articles are accepted on or after January 1, 2023 for publication in Microbiology Society journals can have their work published Open Access (OA) at no cost to themselves. The associated charges (known as Article Processing Charges, or APCs) are covered by the Libraries.

The agreement covers articles published in any of the Microbiology Society's journals, including the two fully Open Access journals, Microbiology and Access Microbiology. Corresponding authors must be affiliated with UNL in order for the article to be eligible for the APC waiver. The corresponding author should ensure that they specify their UNL affiliation and a unl.edu or huskers.unl.edu email address during the article submission process, in order to be identified as eligible by the Microbiology Society's systems; when asked about eligibility for fee-free Open Access publishing, answer "Yes".

Eligible articles will be published Open Access under a CC-BY license, with the author retaining copyright. In order to not publish the article OA, where the option is available, authors must explicitly opt out during the submission process.

For a description of the steps involved for authors, see The Microbiology Society’s Publish and Read Author Guide (refer to the steps for the "touch-free" process). For more information, contact David Macaulay at UNL Libraries.
