LUNA Descriptive Elements in Alphabetical Order

These are the core descriptive metadata elements as they currently exist in LUNA, the platform used for the UNL Image & Multimedia Collections. Not all possible elements are listed since LUNA metadata schemes are very flexible. All element definitions are based on those provided by Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). For a key or explanation of the table components, refer to the Home tab.

Definition

An entity primarily responsible for making the resource (DCMI).

Usage

Provide name(s) of person, family, or corporate body responsible for making the resource.  Prefer authorized form from a controlled vocabulary such as:

  • Library of Congress Name Authorities (LCNAF)
  • Getty Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)

 

When no authorized form for a person is available, provide fullest name possible as follows:

[Last Name], [First Name] [Middle Initial]., [Suffix], [Year of birth]-[Year of death]

Definition

A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource (DCMI).

Usage

Prefer Extended Date/Time Format (EDTF) 1.0 (ISO 8601). Otherwise use natural language to express date as fully as possible. Do not abbreviate. Use approximate date or range when exact date is not known.

Definition

An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context (DCMI).

Usage

Provide identifiers that are unique, identifying, or accession numbers generated by the original repository.

Definition

A name given to the resource (DCMI).

Usage

Provide title of resource. When available, the title in the catalog record should be used. Otherwise, prefer title displayed on title page. If needed, devise a short and descriptive title that uniquely identifies the resource.

Use sentence case instead of Title Case.

Capitalize proper names.
