E-Books: Demand Driven Purchasing

How to find, download and access e-book collections available through University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries.

What is Demand Driven Purchasing?

Demand Driven Purchasing, Demand Driven Acquisitions, Patron Driven Acquisitions

This is the cost-effective purchasing of titles when they are requested. When a title is accessed for a prescribed number of times, it triggers a purchase request and the library is then charged for the book.  The purchased book is then added to the local collection.

Glossary

Digital Rights Management (DRM) - DRM is any technology that inhibits uses of digital content that is not desired or intended by the content provider. Digital locks are placed in accordance with DRM, to ensure that use of the digital content is in keeping with the DRM policies. Three main DRM schemes are used for eBooks: Adobe, Apple and Marlin Trust Management Organization (MTMO). Other, more specific DRM schemes exist for Adobe and Microsoft readers.

Multiple User Purchase Option (MUPO) - More than one user can access the title at one time.

Non-linear Lending - Libraries buy one copy of an ebook and lend it simultaneously to multiple patrons. This is multiple, simultaneous use of one copy of a title.  There is typically a limit to simultaneous users and there may be a limit to loan instances per year. A use is defined as a patron accessing the title beyond the FREE browsing period

Patron driven acquisitions - Acquisitions that are controlled by patron access. The book is automatically purchased after patrons have accessed it a number of times that have been negotiated by the library and the publishers. The library then owns a perpetual archive.

Perpetual Archive - Purchase option that allows libraries to select titles from a '"front list" or discounted starter pack that they may archive permanently, and receive single or multi-user access permissions.

Post-Cancellation Access – 1) when a publisher ceases operations and titles are no longer available from any other source; 2) when a publisher ceases to publish and offer a title and it is not offered by another publisher or entity; 3) when back issues are removed from a publisher's offering and are not available elsewhere; and/or 4) catastrophic failure by a publisher's delivery platform for a sustained period of time.

Software as a Service (SaaS) - Libraries can license with an eBook platform to distribute their specific digital content online.

Short Term Loans - Books are loaned to the Library for one or seven days, after which the loan expire. The libraries then receive a notification and are given a number of flexible options including purchasing the title, making it available for purchase through Patron Driven Acquisition, or offering another Short-Term Loan.  The number of loans per title is usually limited to three.

Single User Purchase Option (SUPO) - Only one user can access the title at any given time.
